O. V. S. Bulleid was an innovative engineer who revolutionized motive power on the Southern Railway, from the years of World War II, until the end of steam on British Railways.
His locomotives were modern, often amazing, and ground breaking for their time,
which makes them very interesting, if rather complex locomotives.
Bulleid's locomotives burst onto the railway over 70 years ago, with the official naming of 'Channel Packet' on 10th March 1941, as shown in this video clip.
And it is over 60 years since 'Clan Line', last of the Southern's air-smoothed Merchant Navy class locos was rebuilt by B.R.
Remarkably, many Bulleid designed pacifics are still running, either preserved privately, or as part of the National collection.
Some have only returned to steam in recent years, rescued from scrapyards, then painstakingly restored from rusting hulks.
