Building Bulleid's Locomotives

O. V. S. Bulleid was an innovative engineer who revolutionized motive power on the Southern Railway, from the years of World War II, until the end of steam on British Railways.  His locomotives were modern, often amazing, and ground breaking for their time,  which makes them very interesting, if rather complex locomotives.

Bulleid's locomotives burst onto the railway over 70 years ago, with the official naming of 'Channel Packet' on 10th March 1941, as shown in this video clip.

And it is over 60 years since 'Clan Line', last of the Southern's air-smoothed Merchant Navy class locos was rebuilt by B.R.

Remarkably, many Bulleid designed pacifics are still running, either preserved privately, or as part of the National collection.  Some have only returned to steam in recent years, rescued from scrapyards, then painstakingly restored from rusting hulks.

Showcasing Bulleid's designs, this collection of pages includes articles about Mr Bulleid, most of his full size designs, and of miniature versions constructed by model engineers, the story often described by the builder.

Many of the featured builders have gone to extraordinary lengths in pursuit of their creation of a Bulleid locomotive, often including having to research and design it.  How they went about this is hopefully reflected in their own stories of achievement.

Virtually all of Bulleid's designs have been attempted in miniature form by someone, and it is hoped these pages may aid and inspire others in researching, building or modelling these intriguing locomotives.
